‘One or Nothing’ by Arkiv Vilmansa
Opening reception / student dialogue/ collaboration with eeshaun & Wanton Doodle
It’s been a crazy month at FLABSLAB. On 10th November 2011, we launched our first exhibition with Indonesian artist, Arkiv Vilmansa. The opening reception saw more than 200 attendees, including local artists Mark aka SBTG, Casey Chen and Wanton Doodle, among others. Folks were invited to contribute to the exhibition by leaving their mark on our blank canvas, which posed the question: “What is Singapore #one at?” The answers were creative and varied, such as the crowd-favourited ‘reverse planking at Bedok Reservoir’.
Over the weekend, Arkiv played host to students from local art institutions, sharing with them his learning experiences, thoughts on being an artist, how he made the transition from being an architect to a painter and his sources of inspiration. Visitors to White Canvas Gallery were also in for a treat as Arkiv collaborated with two local artists, eeshaun and Wanton Doodle. The resulting artworks were a fusion of distinctive styles that blended seamlessly to accentuate the exhibition’s focus on Singaporean icons. To support endeavors in the local arts scene, the two collaboration pieces will be auctioned to fund the Little Lotus Project.
The exhibition has since shifted to the FLABSLAB Gallery, located at One Commonwealth, #06-11 and will be open till 30 November 2011.
A sneak peek at what’s in store at the exhibition opening today: a one-of-a-kind Merlion sculpture and unique Singaporean icons rendered in Arkiv’s inimitable style. Less than 24 hours to go till the opening, boy can we hardly wait!
this retrospective presentation of maurizio cattelan at the guggenheim museum, new york is a summation of everything the artist has produced since 1989. appropriately entitled ‘all’, each piece on show is hoisted up by rope, as if on gallows, hanging down from the iconic oculus of the guggenheim’s rotunda. in true cattelan-style, this unconventional arrangement of his work resists the traditional exhibition format. the sculptures suspended from the ceiling, as a whole, appear like a mass execution, which en masse is an overarching, tragic artwork in itself. the context of this chronological retrospective creates a site specific installation which celebrates its own futility, an ultimate sublimation of cattelan’s genre.

We think Singaporeans are definitely #one at queueing for Hello Kitty, and at posting photos of commuters on public transport on STOMP.

Poster series explaining complex philosophical theories through basic shapes, the work of Genis Carreras aka GEX, a London graphic designer.
It is amazing what you can communicate with shape, color, and form. Great work. There are many more at Carreras’ page.
